KARAFUU Beach Resort & Spa, the Authentic Soul of Zanzibar

On the southeast coast of Zanzibar, Karafuu Beach Resort & Spa reveals itself amidst tropical gardens, coral rock and ocean light. From the moment you arrive, something soothes. Flower-lined paths traverse grounds open to the horizon, while the makuti roofs blend naturally into the landscape.

Here, the Indian Ocean dictates its rhythm, but never its constraints. On this part of the island, the tides transform the shoreline several times a day. The sea recedes, revealing the coral, then returns to envelop the coast in a deep blue. The Karafuu has chosen to work with this movement rather than oppose it.

A long wooden walkway extends over the shore to a natural pool protected by a coral reef. Here, you reach clear, calm, turquoise water, even when the tide has receded. The crossing is already an experience. The wood warms underfoot, the breeze lifts your clothes slightly, and as you move forward, the gardens seem to disappear behind you.

At the end of the footbridge, the impression is one of being suspended between the sky and the ocean.

A REFUGE INSPIRED BY ZANZIBARI CRAFTSMANSHIP

The rooms, suites and villas are spread across a vast, tree-filled park, generous enough to preserve a real sense of privacy. You don't pass through Karafuu like a simple hotel. You follow shaded paths, you see a gardener busy tending the hibiscus, you sometimes hear laughter behind a hedge or the rustle of a gecko in the foliage.

The traditional thatched makuti roofs are immediately reminiscent of Zanzibar's architecture. Inside, raw wood, natural hues, and artisanal materials create a warm, uncluttered atmosphere. The Afro-contemporary style remains elegant, but always leaves room for the local character.

In the Infinity Villas and Junior Suites, the space invites you to slow down. Openings let in the light, terraces extend the interiors, and some private pools seem to blend into the blue of the lagoon.

In the late afternoon, when the heat softens, we settle there without any specific plan. We simply listen to the trade winds rustling through the palm leaves. Sometimes, this silence, broken only by the surf, is enough to understand that the journey has truly begun.

The Flavours of the Spice Island

In Zanzibar, the cuisine tells the story of the land as much as the landscapes do. Cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger and coconut have long been a part of island life. At Karafuu, this fragrant heritage can be found in a culinary experience that evolves throughout the day.

In the morning, the Kijiji restaurant opens onto the sea. The light is still pale, the air slightly salty, and the first boats appear in the distance. Coffee mingles with the scents of fresh fruit and warm pastries, while the ocean is already changing colour.

In the evening, the atmosphere becomes more intimate. At Le Grand Bleu, tables set near the shore offer grilled fish and seafood by candlelight. The sand still holds some of the day's warmth. Sometimes, a livelier breeze necessitates holding onto a napkin or moving a flame closer. This minor inconvenience doesn't break the spell; on the contrary, it lends the moment a sense of life.

The Masai Village offers a different interpretation of the evening, more cultural and more rhythmic. The dances, songs, and spice-infused recipes evoke the Links which unite Zanzibar with the cultures of East Africa. The aromatic herbs and certain ingredients come directly from the establishment's vegetable garden, extending this focus on local flavours.

Later, the bars accessible from the pools offer a light interlude. You remain in the water, drink in hand, as the sky slowly shifts from pink to purple. It’s not the liveliness that makes the biggest impression, but this very gentle way of letting the day fade away.

BETWEEN MARINE ADVENTURE AND LETTING GO

Around Karafuu, the sea isn't just for looking at. It's for discovering.

The dive centre provides access to the coral reefs off the east coast of Zanzibar, where colourful fish, underwater topography and GAMES The play of light creates an almost silent landscape. Underwater, time seems to expand. Movements slow down, sounds disappear and attention focuses on details that would otherwise have been ignored.

On the ground, the tennis courts and the open spaces of the estate allow for a more active pace. But Karafuu is particularly suited to a natural alternation between movement and rest. A morning in the lagoon can be followed by a walk in the gardens, then a few hours in the shade, without anything seeming programmed.

Perched atop a coral cliff, the Oasis Spa offers a different way to inhabit the landscape. The location overlooks the ocean without isolating itself from it. During treatments, the sound of the surf remains present, sometimes distant, sometimes deeper depending on the tide.

We arrive there again, carried along by the energy of the journey. We leave it slower, almost surprised by the calm that has settled in.

A RESORT ROOTED IN ITS ISLAND

Karafuu doesn't just use Zanzibar's aesthetic codes. It also seeks to integrate its operations into the island's realities.

Water management is a crucial issue here. Desalination facilities help to reduce the pressure on local resources, in an island environment where every use counts. This attention is not always apparent at first glance, but it deeply enriches the experience.

The commitment also continues with the surrounding communities, notably through the ZanHelp association and its actions for children. Behind the well-kept gardens and rooms overlooking the ocean, there is therefore a desire to maintain a concrete link with the territory and those who live there.

Perhaps this is what most distinguishes the Karafuu. The resort composes the journey without erasing the island. It respects its tides, its materials, its flavours, and its people. It structures the stay with enough fluidity that one can forget time, but never the place where one is.

As you prepare to leave, many images remain: the footbridge extending over the lagoon, makuti roofs nestled among the palm trees, a candlelit table, the almost unreal blue of a natural pool.

But it's not just images that we take away.

Zanzibar subtly alters perception. The gaze becomes more attentive. The pace slows. And one returns from Karafuu with a different rhythm to their breathing.

✨ Inspirations in Sri Lanka

Admire the frescoes at Sigiriya, watch the elephants at Minneriya, travel by train through the tea plantations, meditate at a temple in Kandy or surf the waves at Arugam Bay: Sri Lanka is a condensed version of Asia in a single island.
